Exterior description and setting

Two storey, four bay, sand/cement rendered, end of terrace house, in the Georgian style which faces east onto Irish Green Street. It is the largest of a group of two similarly detailed houses (see HB02/12/027B). Natural slate roof. Rendered chimney at each end of ridge. That to north twice the width of that on the gable to the south. Twelve pane sliding sash windows to each floor with painted stone cills. Door located in second bay from south end has a rectangular fanlight with cobweb astragels, and is flanked by Doric pilasters supporting a projecting entablature (exactly as neighbour). A threshold step sits out 500mm approximately into the footpath though it is almost flush with this surface. The panelled door appears to be an appropriate modern replacement.

The south gable which is also rendered in sand/cement, has a square casement window to the centre of the attic. The PVC gutter returns along the wall at its cill level. At ground level a small PVC casement has been broken into the wall near the rear. A lean-to return with two similar windows aligns with the wall.

The back of the house has three windows at first floor. The central twelve pane sash drops into the top of the lean-to and lights the stairs. The other two windows (of similar size) are four pane sashes. A large PVC window with Georgian mullion pattern lights the kitchen in the lean-to.

To the rear of the site is a single storey white washed brick stable block with corrugated metal roof. Part in the curtilage of number 55, a central arch (flat to house, segmental to garden) gives access to the long garden. To the left slatted timber doors access the present garage.

Historical information

House first indicated on the 1848 Ordnance Survey Map. In the 1858 Griffith’s Valuation it was occupied by Reverend Peter Finan and leased from Mr J Craig, value £12. 10s. 0d. Reverend Finan also leased a garden in what is now 63 Irish Green Street at that time. The detail of the living room would normally be associated with a date towards the end of the century and this may have been renovated at that time. The building has been used as a dwelling house since. The present occupants have lived in the house five years and have built the small lean-to return.

Mid Victorian terraced house with fine exterior detail to the windows and in particular the fanlight of the front door. It is part of a good group of two similar buildings which are complimented by the later Victorian terrace continuing from its neighbour. Its location enhances the setting of the Second Presbyterian Church (HB02/12/026). The fine detail of the interior living room and staircase is of note.
