Exterior description and setting

Three roomed derelict direct entry cottage with some original thatch and structure remaining under a corrugated metal roof.

The white washed building is sited almost perpendicular to Terrydoo Road with the remains of tin out buildings in a small front farmyard. The building faces south east. A barn is attached to the north west under the roof and abutting the road. There is one opening to the barn, a door beside the end wall of the house. One opening (window gone) lights the upper room of the house, a second (similar) lights the kitchen. The sheeted door enters the kitchen, and a third window lights the lower room. The south west gable is of recently constructed block work. The rear has no bed outshot, windows light the kitchen and lower room. Behind the cottage at an angle is a second similar building in a more advanced state of decay.

Historical information

Building on 1831 map used as a farmhouse until 1970s when present owners moved into neighbouring house. The lower room seems to have been divided in two as HB02/11/019 from the sudden change in paint colour, this stud wall removed in conversion to outhouse.

Evaluation

Of interest mainly for the surviving roof construction and the attempts made to avoid collapse, but also for the use of a truss and a stud wall between the kitchen and lower room which is very unusual. The building is of local and perhaps national interest as a variation on a common type.
