The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A single room school three bays long with gable next road and in it the entrance door off centre. Three windows in each of the long walls with high cills and windows with six panes. A slated roof of large slates and chimney at each gable. Walls smooth rendered and painted. The school was extended after it was taken over by the Western Education and Library Board to provide a school meals servery. This extension is at the south gable of the building. In later times probably under the W E L B the classroom was divided into two small rooms. Contiguous to the building and on the north side is a temporary classroom.
Historical information
The school does not resemble a National School and was likely to have been erected under the patronage of the Marquis of Waterford. Now that the WELB has vacated it the property has reverted to the estate. Ordnance Survey Memoir refers to a school in the adjacent townland of Ballycrum which was established in 1832. Its dimensions however do not fit the Drumramer School being 22 feet by 14 built of stone and lime. However it is likely Drumramer replaced the Ballycrum School. In this century Drumramer School catered for catholic children.
