Exterior description and setting

Three room direct entry former thatched cottage now with metal roof. Situated at a slight angle to, and below, Windyhill Road. The house aligns with the slope of the hill and faces north west towards the road.

The upper north east gable is surmounted by a chimney and sits above the level of the corrugated metal. There are two other chimneys unequally spaced on the ridge but the roof overhangs the concrete block work of the south west gable which has no chimney.

The door is off centre and is protected by a flat roofed glass porch. To the north east, a window to the kitchen and a further two to the upper room. To the south west two windows, one to the lower room and the second to a store accessed by sheeted door adjacent.

To the rear the building has had two lean-to extensions. One below the level of the metal roof is situated at the north east end. The second at the south west end rises 600mm higher and intersects the roof but has a lower portion similar to the first.

A low stone retaining wall white washed as the house abuts the road in front. To the south west the painted wall of a recently demolished out house. To the east a new replacement storey and a half house with dormers, perpendicular to the road is under construction. Windows to the front are casement to the rear metal and sash.

Historical information

Building indicated on 1831 map. Standard vernacular type of three aligning rooms with the addition of a store on south west gable. Lean-to rooms added this century. Window to front of house may have been enlarged in past.

Evaluation

Simple picturesqe vernacular building, well maintained, which added character to Windyhill Road. Interesting departure from normal with one exposed gable and overhang at other. The alterations at the rear detract, but are still within the vernarular in that they are a standard solution to the need for more space.
