Exterior description and setting

Substantially renovated two storey three bay farmhouse facing N across Lough Foyle. Heavy handed pitched roof glazed porch centrally placed on facade. Porch flanked by timber casement windows. Tiled roof with overhanging barges. Chimneys at gables. Building finished in roughcast render and painted white. Concrete brick wall at entrance to road curving back to entrance drive. No surviving barns or outbuildings.

Historical information

Described in 1970 as “late 19th century, two storey house with harled and colour washed walls and slated roof. All windows D/H, three pane wide on 1st floor, four pane on ground floor, gable windows with sashes divided in two panes vertically. The entrance is surmounted by a rectangular two pane fanlight”. 1830 and 1855 Ordnance Survey maps show houses and barns closer to the road than the present building. These buildings are shown on the present map (1963) but were demolished by 1970. The building described appears first on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map. The renovation of the building (probably in the late 1980s) has been so substantial that it looks like a replacement dwelling. However a slide in HB records taken in 1970 shows a building of the same form on the site.

Evaluation

A late 19th century farmhouse, presumably recorded in 1970 for its surviving detail and positive impact on the landscape. It now has little or no architectural value.
