Exterior description and setting

Two storey three bay vernacular farmhouse with associated barns in a linear group at the S. side of Clooney Road. Buildings all harled and painted white, more recent concrete block wall also harled and painted unifies the group along the road side.

The openings on the main facade of the house are not symmetrically placed. The entrance door with single pane sidelights is protected by brick side walls with a flat painted concrete cap. Windows are all metal casements. The two to the first floor are square in proportion.

Both gables are surmounted by brick chimneys and concrete barges. Each has a single window at first floor to the rear.

There is no return at the rear. A sheeted back door is flanked by two windows. There is a single window above. The roof is natural slate.

Five metres behind the back of the building is a painted concrete retaining wall. The field behind rises steeply. To the SW a two storey concrete block barn with natural slate roof and stone gable is painted and aligns with the retaining wall. In front near the road a single storey stone barn has a slate roof and a lower barn has a corrugated metal roof. An open metal clad turf shed completes the group.

Historical information

Present occupant has lived in house thirty seven years. He raised it from storey and a half to two storey in 1958. The concrete retaining walls and barn walls are replacements of previous stone walls. Clooney Road once passed hard up to the garden walls. The carriageway is now four metres from the wall. The building is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1830 without barns. An extension to the SW is shown on the 1855 Ordnance Sheet. The present arrangement of barns without the extension is shown from 1924.

Evaluation

A very picturesque group of buildings along Clooney Road which add greatly to the attractiveness of their surroundings. Though the buildings have been renovated in this century, and the arrangement of windows on the facade is without proportion, all alterations are consistent with what could be termed vernacular.
