The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A single storey stone built gate lodge with hipped asbestos slated roof and full width back returns with lean-to tiled roof. Centre door with window on either side, openings brick trimmed, and another smaller one in the gable of lean-to. The windlowess west gable is built into the back of the footwalk to Culmore Road and a tall chimney stack rises from this gable. A wing wall extends on either side of gable wall and continues south along the footwalk
Historical information
As both north and south lodges are referred to in Griffiths 1858 Valuation they are pre mid-century. Dean suggests this lodge is 20 years earlier than south lodge ( circa 1830) though it does not appear on the 1st Edition OS map. The architect, Fitzgibbon Louch, worked on the main house (HB01/27/015) and may have had an influence on this building.
(July '99: since the second survey visit this building has been partly demolished- the front wall has been knocked in and the roof is collapsing over. )
