Exterior description and setting

No. 176 is a two storey, end of three terrace, four bays wide house.It is rendered in roughcast externally and painted white.The roof finish is natural slates with rendered chimney. It has the same mid-floor band of slates as No. 172 (HB01/27/008A)where the wall thickness changes. The entrance door is off-centre probably because the cottage was increased in length. To south of the door there is a 12 pane sliding sash window and on the other side a tripartite window repeating those of the remainder of the terrace. Beyond the tripartite there is a 16 pane sliding sash window. On the first floor and centred on windows below there are nine pane sliding sash windows. Entrance door is four panelled with shallow rectangular fanlight. There is only a single storey porch extension to the rear and so the mid floor slated band can be observed. The gable is windowless and on the rear elevation there are vertical sash windows, four pane non-sliding. Half round PVC guttering with downpipes fixed on gable.

Before this cottage had gable bay added the terrace of three was symmetrically composed.

Historical information

The terrace is indicated on OSS 1830 and it is probable that it was single storey at that time and erected as tenant houses by the Culmore Estate or Irish Society. The upper floor was probably added after 1860. The house must have been extended in length by one bay albeit very sympathetically and re-roofed with chimney moved to gable from former gable position.

Evaluation

A pleasing late Georgian style terrace cottage, later improved very sympathetically in mid-Victorian period. The house and terrace make a picturesque arrangement set in well kept gardens.
