Exterior description and setting

A large single storey Georgian style villa five bays wide by three bays deep with two back returns with entrance door in north west facade centrally placed with bold canted bays on either side and a single sliding sash window beyond the bays. Each gable has an asymmetrically placed entrance with single sliding sash on either side, natural slated hipped roofs, bays slated and hipped, moulded yellow brick chimneys each with tall clay moulded pots.

Main entrance door has two leaves each having two moulded and raised panels with slender panelled pilaster on each side. There is a moulded cornice with dentils and above a delicate elliptical fanlight. Five steps lead to doorway. Sliding sash windows all have 12 panes, three windows to each canted bay. There is a deep plain plinth, walls smooth rendered and painted with painted quoins at principal corners only.

Below roof overhang a simple string moulding and under the overhang joists exposed. No fascia but h/r black gutter and black downpipes. Dark red hip and ridge tiles.

On the gables each door is four panelled with deep rectangular plain fanlight.

A basement extends under the full extent of the ground floor and back returns and the accommodation within contains eight flats. Steps lead down to a basement area.

A free standing house set in its own grounds, now much reduced in size, being encroached upon by residential development with access from Dervock Place. Formerly the house had well laid out grounds of approximately one hectare with direct access from Chapel Road. Ground slopes steeply from south to north and retains several mature trees.

Historical information

Little has been established on the house or its earlier residents. It is not shown on the 1830 Ordnance Survey Sheet but is shown on Piffler and Cowen’s map of 1848-9 more or less as it is to-day except that the grounds are shown with well laid out gardens. Griffiths valuation of 1858 gives a value of £40 for house and offices, resident Reverend W McClure, Lessor John Mahon who had a brewery in Waterside.
