The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
HB01/11/005B should be read with HB01/11/005A.
The platform and canopy with supports continue from the station concourse in a south west direction parallel to the river.
The former platform and canopy has been enclosed in a new envelope of modern masonry construction so that neither is visible from the exterior.
Historical information
The platform and canopy were complete on 1 August 1900. The builder was Messrs Campbell of Belfast and the engineer/designer James Barton. However the iron structure of the canopy is similar to that developed by W H Mills, Chief Engineer of Great Northern Railways(I) appointed in 1877. The columns are facsimiles of those produced for Dundalk Station in 1870s. Mills design was described as “flexible and could be adapted to a wide range of buildings”.
