Exterior description and setting

White washed and slated former thatched house and courtyard at head of Tireighter Road. House is built into run of slope and faces south east. Sheeted door with one window to left (modern frame) and two smaller windows to the room on the right (also modern frame). Barn with sheeted door, same width, but lower slated eaves adjoined to right and lower on slope. Barn with corrugated iron roof adjoining to upper side of house, obscured to courtyard by white washed barn with corrugated roof perpendicular to house.

A well surrounded by a whitewashed stone wall is located beside the end of the barn in south east corner of courtyard.

To the north east a range of stone barns with corrugated roofs parallel to the house step down the slope. The lowest is perpendicular to the house though does not sit in front of its neighbours. The lowest north east corner of the courtyard has a white washed concrete block barn with monopitch roof, it is much lower on the slope and appears as a metre high wall to the courtyard.

The back of the cottage is dug into the slope, the stone lined sheugh is wide enough to park the tractor and a flat roofed kitchen extension sits on the position of the bed outshot.

Evaluation

A well preserved vernacular farmyard group, little changed in the modern era. A good example of the type of "wee house" once common in this ward, there are now very few examples remaining.
