Located on rock outcrop at the SW foothills of Carrickbyrne Hill. A Corinthian column (H 28.75m) of Wicklow granite was erected in 1839 41 by Gerard Robert Browne Clayton to a design by Thomas Cobden based on Ptolemy’s column in Alexandria, Egypt, to commemorate the battle of Alexandria (21 03 1801), in which Napoleon was defeated by Sir Ralph Abercrombie and in which Browne-Clayton had taken part. A newel stairs within gives access to top. It was struck by lightning and badly damaged in late December 1994 (New Ross Standard, 5 1 1995), but it was repaired and conserved in 2003 by Wexford Monument Trust Ltd., who acquired the land with local and international financial assistance.
