Pit-burial

Located in the valley of a SE-NW stream on a slight ridge. It is on the S bank of an E-W section with the stream c. 10m to the N. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross by-pass identified and completely excavated a small subcircular pit (diam. 0.7-0.8m; D 0.6m) filled with grey-brown sandy clay that had charcoal inclusions, and two sherds of pottery were recovered. The pit was sealed with redeposited subsoil. A second pit (diam. 0.35m; D 0.3m) 2.2m to the WSW was filled with some loose stones and red clay with some charcoal. This pit was disturbed during the trenching and sherds of poorly preserved pottery may have been destroyed. (Hackett et al. 2009, 47-8)
