The National Monuments Service's description
Located on a W-facing slope with the N-S River Barrow/Nore c. 800m to the W and an E-W section of that river is c. 730m to the N. Centre-line testing (E4067) in advance of the N25 New Ross by-pass identified a small enclosure (diam. c. 5-6m) defined by a slot-trench, and some associated features (Doyle et al. 2010, 28). It was set aside for resolution as Stokestown 1 and fully excavated (E4523) in November 2013. An oval hearth (dims 1.6m N-S; 1.04m E-W; max. T 0.28m) is associated with six small pits (diam. c. 0.3m; D 0.3m to diam. 0.85m; D 0.15m) that contained sterile gravel or sandy silt fills. A later E-W boundary ditch crossed the area c. 5m S of the hearth, and a N-S furrow cut the ditch. (Stephens 2014, 5-6)
