From: O’Mahony, A. (1987, 7, f) Attached to the E wall of the S transept is a slab (Wth 0.63m; H 2.18m; T 0.16m) with a raised hood near the top of the stone. The right side of the stone is broken and it is cracked across below the middle. The lower half of the stone is less worn and a gown is incised, falling in folds to the ankles. The feet are in pointed shoes with straps and rest on stylized foliage. Beneath the hood is the head and neck of a man in relief, the head resting on a cushion. Five heads peer out above the hood, two female and a male on the left, and a male and a female on the right. The inscription, in Lombardic lettering, is on top of the hood.

It reads: HIC IACET ROGERUS CVLERICUS (Here lies Roger the clerk).

Roger the Clerk was elected provost of New Ross at Michaelmas in 1282 (Orpen 1911c, 25). The stone may therefore be dated to the late 13th century. The heads over the hood doubtless represent Roger’s family.
