Tomb - chest tomb

From: O’Mahony, A. (1987, 17-18, No. 12) Attached to the built-up north wall of the South Transept is a very well-preserved tomb (Wth 1m; H 2.03m; T 0.18m) with a central cross, the head and arms of which are linked by the crown of thorns. The sun and moon are depicted, one on either side of the head of the cross. The stem of the cross extends the length of the stone and there are numerous emblems of crucifixion. They include the spear with the sponge, thirty pieces of silver, the ear of Malchus and the sword, Christ’s garment (a Tudor tunic), the dice and the cock on the left side; Veronica’s cloth, Caiphas in his mitre, the pillar and scourge, the reed, the five wounds and the boiling cock which rose from the pot in the legend on the right side. There is a skull and bone at the foot of the cross and the coat of arms with initials of both families, one either side. The inscription is along the edge of the stone. It reads:

Hic. Jacet. Johanes Nevell. huius. ville. quondam speriror. qui. obijt 29 die. Junij A (o) 1637 et uxor. eius. Maria Rothe. que. obijt blank quorum, aiabus ppicietur dues
(Here lies John Nevell, formerly sovereign of this town, who died on the 29th day of June in the year 1637, and his wife Maria Rothe, who died . On whose souls may God look with favour.)
