House - 17th century

The National Monuments Service's description

According to the Civil Survey (1654-56) a parcel of land amounting to 1260 acres in Ballyduff, Ballinturner, Mountfin, Tomgarrow and the unknown Culcleirre that is probably Mountfin Upper was owned by Brien McDaniell O'Breine, Lisagh McMorough O'Breine, Gerald O'Breine and Sir Morgan Kavanagh in 1641 (Simington 1953, 278). A stone house, two mills and two weirs were on this property. The house is probably Mountfin House located on the W bank of the N-S River Slaney with the stream c. 50m to the E. A photograph of c. 1890 shows a central block of three bays and three storeys with two rectangular corner towers on the W front. There are four chimney stacks on the N and S walls. It is probably early 17nth century in date. but the house was pulled down c. 1970. (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987, 182-3; Pl. XIX)
