Situated on a slight rise in the floor of the N-S River Slaney, with the stream c. 100m to the W. Land at Ballycarney was granted to Sir James Carroll, Mayor of Dublin, in 1612 and confirmed in 1618. It was attacked by the Kavanaghs in 1620, but the house might not have been completed yet. In 1621 a bawn '74 feet square' was being built. It is described in the Civil Survey as a large stone house owned by a Thorentone, a Richard Wale and a Bartholomew Breine in 1640 (Simington 1953, 265) as part of an extensive property in Ferns parish (WX015-027----). Its subsequent history cannot be traced. Two rectangular flanking towers of three storeys with string-courses and simple crenellations survived in 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 267). There are no visible remains of this structure at ground level in a root crop. (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987. 187–8)
