The National Monuments Service's description
Excavated (E3472) during 2005 by H. Schweitzer as Site 7 at Moneycross Upper, which was one of the excavations undertaken in advance of the construction of the N11 Arklow-Gorey link-road. Situated in a low-lying landscape with a small N-S stream c. 20m to the W, but an old N-S stream bed crossed the site, although it was largely silted up when activity began.
A raised platform of sandy clay (dims. 6.5m x 6.5m) was built before a rectangular trough (dims. 1.25m N-S; 0.85m E-W) that had corner stake-holes and evidence of plank-lining was cut into its SW corner. This trough was extended (dims. 2.64m N-S; 1.8m E-W; D 0.43m) and lined with wood on the sides and base. A hearth (diam. 1.3m; D 0.26m) was cut in to the suboil c. 3m NW of the trough. The trough was covered by a spread of broken and burnt stone which covered a large area in several layers. After a period of abandonment makred by silt layers a hearth and pit and further spreads of burnt mound material covered the area. (Schweitzer 2008)
