Fulacht fia

The National Monuments Service's description

Archaeological testing (12E0306) in an area of c. 7 ha (c. 18acres) c. 250m WSW of the core of Gorey town (WX007-033----) identified and excavated two fulachta fia, three burnt mounds, a pit and a corn-drying kiln. This fulacht fia in Area B was on the S side of a small E-W stream or drain and was covered by a substantial amount of silt. The oval mound (dims 20m ENE-WSW; 11m NNW-SSE; T 0.83m) contained several separate layers of heat-affected stones and sealed an oval trough (dims 2.25m x 1.63m; D 0.21m) that contained four fills, all of which contained heat-affected stones. There was evidence for in situ burning on the SW side and a total of 24 stake-holes are located on the N side of the trough. About 3m to the E is a second pit (dims 6.55m NW-SE; 0.8m NE-SW; max. D 0.8m) which is cut by the stream at N and which may have been another trough, although this is not certain. A sample from the primary fill of the trough produced a C14 date of 2035-1775 Cal BC.
