Ringfort - rath

The National Monuments Service's description

The remains of a roughly-circular earthwork which could be the remains of much degraded ringfort are visible on Bing Maps aerial photograph (pers. comm. C. McCormack). A possible ringfort (WM030-127----) is located in the adjoining field to the SE. This possible ringfort is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. A levelled post-medieval field boundary can be seen on the aerial photograph running NW-SE across the centre of the possible ringfort. A series of earthworks of unknown antiquity can be seen in the field immediately to the N. Cultivation ridges of post-medieval date can be seen on the aerial photograph in the field immediately to the S of the monument. The curvilinear field boundary visible on aerial photograph to the NNW represents the remains of a laneway that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. This laneway gave access to a an L-plan building possibly a farmhouse that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and located a few metres to the W of the possible ringfort. It is possible that this earthwork may be contemporaneous with the L-plan farmhouse.
