Ringfort - rath

Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, overlooking bog from SW-W and with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM020-069----) lies c. 80m to E. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 28.6m N-S; 25.6m E-W) enclosed by a bank and the remains of an external fosse. The bank is high and steep incorporating some large stones in its outer face. It is best preserved from E-S and elsewhere it is almost reduced to a scarp with several modern gaps. There is a large depression in the upper edge of the bank at SE. The fosse is visible from SSW-W-N-NNE. A modern field fence of earth and stone runs NNW-SSE along the foot of the scarp from NNE-E-ESE. There is also a short segment of modern bank at the foot of the scarp at SE. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a gentle NW-facing slope and a slightly uneven surface. Monument is visible today as an oval-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.
