The National Monuments Service's description

Milltown Castle was depicted as a tower house type structure on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathconrath parish (NLI MS 723-4). The terrier of parish map stated there was a castle in the townland of Milltown which in 1641 was in the possession of Oliver Dalton who is listed as an Irish papist' (ibid.).
Castle site situated directly N of a farmhouse and adjoining the NE end of a farmyard. A dovecote (WM017-058001-) lies c. 120m to SE. Location of castle is visible as a rectangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 34m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) enclosed by a wall to NW, NE and SE and open to SW on Digital Globe aerial photography. Annotated on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Milltown Castle in ruins’. Annotated on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as ‘Milltown Castle (Site of)’.
Site of Milltown Castle described in 1978 as directly N of a cottage there are some low but fairly substantial grass-covered wall foundations which may be medieval in date and belong to the castle.
