Field system

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on grassland immediately W of the Stonyford River.Earthworks in field to N, E, S and W of Clonarney Castle (WM009-034001-) and graveyard (WM009-034003-) represent the remains of a field system and possibly that of a deserted medieval settlement associated with the castle although no clear house sites are visible on the ground. The linear earthworks were waterlogged at time of inspection and these features feed into the Stonyford River and appear to be drainage channels of uncertain date. Two of these linear earthworks are depicted as parallel field boundaries on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The majority of the earthworks in the field including the well preserved ridge and furrow to the S and E of the graveyard appear to be related to agricultural activity of unknown date rather than settlement although some of the small paddocks may be enclosures belonging to house sites that have no surface remains. A possible sunken roadway appears to run N from the castle and graveyard. The earthworks to the S of the graveyard appear to cut across the ridge and furrow suggesting different dates in the construction of these earthworks.
