The National Monuments Service's description
In 1647 a fine of £15 was levied on a group of mills in Co. Westmeath to pay Captain Ignatius Nugent of the Irish Confederate Army. The sum of £1 8s was levied on 'Edward Fay, or same, one mill at Direnegaragh [Derrynagarragh] (Cal. S.P. Ire., 624). The Corn Mill depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map may be located on site of watermill depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Teagheltowne (Faughalstown) parish (NLI, MS 723-4). The medieval mill belonged to Edward Fay. The location of the present corn mill matches closely the location of the mill marked on the Down Survey map. On this map the mill is depicted with a vertical waterwheel on the gable of a building standing on the bank of a stream.
