The National Monuments Service's description
Archaeological excavation (96E0306) uncovered traces of what was probably a timber frame building c. 30m E of the gateway into the castle (WA031-040001-) on the shingle beach. A line of stones and clay pockets may represent the bed of a base beam, just inside the town wall, which may have been extant at the time. Medieval pottery is associated with this and an associated cobbled surface. (Pollock 1997d, 20-23; 1997c)
