The National Monuments Service's description

Marked as a substantial building described as a castle on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as the site of a castle on the 1927 ed. Situated in pasture at the crest of a SW-facing slope down to the confluence of the SE-NW Finisk River to its S with the N-S Blackwater River to the W, c. 200-300m from both rivers. It is also c. 300m W of the site of Affane church, at the W end of Affane town (WA029-013----). Affane was established by 1300, and was owned by Sir Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, in 1640 (Simington 1942, 47). J. O'Donovan recorded the ruins of a 'strong dwelling house 45ft x 19ft' (dims. c. 13.7m x 5.8m) c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1929, 70). Nothing is visible at ground level. (O'Connell-Redmond 1918, 145-6)
