The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on high ground overlooking the S bank of the W-E River Blackwater, c. 100m to the N. The castle of Ballygarran was situated in what is now Glencairn Abbey (O'Connell-Redmond 1918, 64-5). In 1641 the castle was described as small and was owned by the Earl of Cork but occupied by a Catherine Power (Simington 1942, 8). An early 19th century neo-Gothic house, known as Castlerichard, was begun c. 1814 by R. E. Gumbleton and completed after his death by his brother-in-law, H. A. Bushe. This was a one and two storey U-shaped house, incorporating earlier fabric. It became a convent of Cistercian nuns in 1930 and was damaged by fire in 1973, after which it was extensively rebuilt.
