The National Monuments Service's description
Excavations in 1993 (Excavation Licence number 93E0094) revealed organic layers at depths of between 1.6m and 2.1m (Henry 1994, 75). The layers, which were very dark in colour and had a strong organic smell, contained human and occupational waste (ibid.). The finds included animal bones, charcoal, oyster shells, hazelnut shells, blackberries, broken clay pipes, sherds of pottery, strands of leather and other occupational waste (ibid. 75-6). The archaeological evidence dated the organic deposits to the late 1600s and the early 1700s (ibid. 76).
