Bawn

The National Monuments Service's description

According to the Civil Survey (1654-56) the land was owned in 1640 by 'John Butler of Cloghbrydy Irish Papist' and one the land stands 'a Bawne a thatcht house with severall Cottages' (Simington, 1931, 230). A length of the bawn wall (L 32m; H c. 2.5m above int.; Wth 0.95m) survives 22m SE of the tower house (TS075-030001-). The internal wall face does not survive and the wall is surmounted by ivy. It is constructed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed and runs roughly in an N-S direction, kinking out after 17.6m (5.2m of which is good upstanding walling) to run NW-SE. The N length for 12.4m consists of collapsed walling. At 32m there appears to be a return, evidenced by a low grass-covered mound which runs in a westerly direction along the top of a low ledge. The wall forming the W side of the bawn does not survive, however there is a rise which may be the remains of the wall. The ground surface dips down in places, this may be the result of limited quarrying or perhaps indicates internal structures against the bawn wall.
