Graveslab

The National Monuments Service's description

Lying at the E end of the former chancel of the medieval parish church of St John the Baptist (TS070-040001-), currently Holy Trinity C of I church. It is possible that this graveslab, like its neighbour (TS070-040087-) was buried at the E end of the chancel and was discovered when a vault for Wray Palliser was being built in 1861. It is a tapering rectangular limestone slab (L 1.95m; Wth at top 0.69m; Wth at base 0.57m) which is decorated in relief with a central IHS motif, with a cross rising from the bar of the H, and beneath this motif there is heart, with the initials P. H., surmounted by three nails. The latin inscription in Roman capitals reads: EXVLTABO IN above the central motif and: DEO IESV MEO around the heart. There is no date visible on this graveslab. According to a transcription by Long (1907-09, vol. 7, 179) the inscription continued with, 'QUI FUIT SEPERIOR FIDERDIAE ET', however, this is no longer visible.
