The National Monuments Service's description
The Civil Survey (1654-6) records 'Nicholas Everard of Fethard Esqr.' as being the proprietor in 1640 and 'the sd lands hath on it a small castle with some few Cottages' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 189). Earthworks (TS070-011003-) located to N, W and S of castle (TS070-011001-) in level pasture, to NW of Kilknockan Hill. Slight visible surface trace of semi-circular area (dims. c. 35m N-S; c. 26m E-W) defined by low profile bank (Wth 5.9m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.3m) E-S-WSW as per 1843 edition OS six-inch map. Bisected by farm road (Wth 4m) and no visible surface trace on northern side except curvilinear scarp which may be part of natural downslope to wet area of Clashoona Pool to NE. Possibly levelled out c. 40 years ago when remains of castle walls were levelled. Church (TS070-011002-) is c. 45m to ESE.
