The National Monuments Service's description
The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to 'a thatcht house' in Boytonrath under the proprietorship in 1640 of James Butler 'Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 238). White (1892, 30), in describing Boytonrath castle (TS068-061002-) mentions that 'Mr John Loughnane, P.L.G., who resided in the adjoining, (which bye the bye is about the oldest country house I have ever seen, one of the oak collar beams bearing the date of 1641)'. The house marked on the 1st (1840) and 2nd (1900-05) ed. OS 6-inch maps is located c. 20m SE of the enclosure (TS068-061001-) surrounding Boytonrath castle. It appears to be a long, narrow house (L c. 30-35m; D c. 6m). There is no visible trace of this house above ground. The present house on the location appears to be of 19th or early 20th-century date.
