The National Monuments Service's description
Inserted into the inner face of the N wall of the nave of St. Dominick's Abbey (TS061-025007-). This limestone fragment of a side panel from a late 16th/early 17th century altar tomb. It is stylistically similar to altar tombs produced by the O'Kerin school of monumental sculpture (1577 to 1637) which was probably based in Callan, Co. Kilkenny. The lower portion of the panel is decorated with the instruments of the Passion, including a crown of thorns with a heart in the centre and a pair of hands above and a pair of feet below, pierced with nail wounds and a crucifixion scene with a spear, sponge on a pole, hammer, pincers and ladder. This decorative scheme is divided by fluted, tapering columns. The upper portion of the panel has a horizontal frieze decorated with a scoll motif consisting of a double scroll paired to form a heart shape. The upper and lower portions of the panel are separated by a projecting horizontal moulding.
