The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a low rise of ground in undulating countryside with good views in all directions. In 1318 the community of the town of Fythmothan and Burgageferne owed 3.6s. 8d for an escape and in 1338 the Burgesses of Fethmothan render 2 marks and 22d in time of peace (Bradley 1985, 57). The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to Kilfithmone as an 'ancient Mannor haveing ye prvilege of a court leet and Court baron by pattent from the Crowne as wee are informed' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 73). There are no earthworks visible at ground level in association with this settlement.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
