Standing stone

Situated in a large rolling field with hills to the E and S and another rising to SW; views hindered by hills and rising ground. This was a small standing stone (H 1.1m; dims. 1.1m x 0.23m), set approx. 1m into the ground, roughly aligned on a N-S axis situated near the centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TN027-100) which was excavated by Con Manning in 1979. Excavation around the base of the standing stone threw no light on its function, however, most of the small finds recovered were assigned to the Early Christian period (Manning 1984b, 237). All field boundaries have been removed and the field has been reclaimed. The site is indicated on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map as an irregular area defining Killederdadrum graveyard but is not indicated on the 2nd ed., though 'it was known locally that the site was a graveyard and it was called “The Kyle Field” or “Kylederrydadrum” ' (ibid., 239). Excavation revealed Early Christian occupation contemporary with the enclosure and later burials often cutting across the occupation features (ibid., 237-68). No visible trace of this standing stone.
