The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on a SW-facing slope of rising ground in undulating countryside with good views of pastureland from E through S to W. A castle and dwelling are shown on Strafford's survey of 1637 (NLI 16.1.17(14a, 14b)). Not visible at ground level. Surviving architectural remains at 'South Park' belong to the late 18th century. It has been assumed that the house marked as South Park on the OS 6-inch maps was built on the site of 'Rathinan Castle' which was recorded in the Civil Survey of 1654 as 'an old demolished castle, the walls onely standing without any other Improvement' (Simington 1934, 283). the castle of 'Rathinane' is depicted standing just N of a 'Turlough' which is depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. The building marked as 'South Park' is roughly located in the area depicted on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Lower Ormond barony (NLI MS 721). However it is possible that the medieval castle was located at a different location to 'South Park'. This house was described by the NIAH as a 'Detached five-bay two-storey over basement house, built c. 1785, with earlier two-bay three-storey building attached to rear the latter with later lean-to porch. Artificial slate roofs, hipped to front block, with laterally placed chimneystacks to rear, and pitched to earlier block having large square stone chimneystack. Rendered walls with cut stone cornice to main block and tie bars to rear block' (www.buildingsofireland.ie). The block to the rear of the house appears to pre-date the 18th century house and may incorporate remains of the medieval castle of 'Rathinane'.
