Ringfort - rath

In pasture, on top of and occupying almost the entire width of a narrow ridge with panoramic views and overlooking another rath (SL047-060----), c. 200m to NE. The rath is indicated as an oval enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is now evident as a slightly raised, roughly D-shaped area (25.5m N-S; 23m E-W) defined at W by a linear NNE-SSW field boundary which truncates the W arc. The interior is defined NNW-SSW by a scarp (H 1.05m) with a slight internal lip (H 0.3m). The scarp (H 1.4m) NNW-NE is incorporated into a second field boundary. There is an eroded gap (Wth 2m) in the scarp at SE. The interior is level and grass-covered and the perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and brambles. A slight hollow around the base of the scarp, noted during a previous inspection in 1993 (SMR (1989) file), is no longer evident.
