The National Monuments Service's description
This feature, first shown on the 1914 OS 6-inch map, lies c. 30m SE of a passage tomb (SL040-090001-) in the Carrowkeel passage tomb cemetery. A fragmented block of limestone (c. 1.7m x 1.2m x 0.5m) rests on four low rounded sandstone boulders partly buried in peat. These boulders are substantially obscured by the constituent parts of the limestone block which are tilted downwards and it is unclear if they have been deliberately placed in position or occur naturally. According to Macalister, Armstrong and Praeger (1912, 330-31), there were also three limestone slabs set on edge at the site, 'apparently placed with the intention of forming a cist'. What may be one of these stones can be recognised but its status remains uncertain. It would be necessary to remove the broken limestone block to form a reliable assessment of the nature of this feature. (Ó Nualláin 1989, 99, no. 27)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
