The National Monuments Service's description
At base of a slight SSW-facing slope on the shore of Lough Arrow and on SW side of earthwork (SL034-220002-) associated with Ballindoon Castle (SL034-220001-). The well consists of a roughly circular depression (1.4m N-S; 1.5m E-W; max. D 1.4m), lined on the N side with rocks, with an irregular outflow gully (L 1.5m) on the NW side. The base of the well is muddy with some rocks protruding through it and the gully is roughly lined with small rocks. The well was filled with lake water when inspected but according to local information, it also holds water during the summer months when the lake level is lower. Wood-Martin (1882, 227) suggests the well was used to temper weapons of war. No trace of any tokens to indicate holy use and no local information that there were any cures associated with it.
