The National Monuments Service's description

A mill is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 towards the headwaters of the Killeglan river and above the castle (RO050-008001-) (Simington 1949, Athlone (46)). Situated on the SE bank of a loop of the stream and described as a corn mill on the 1837 and 1915 eds of the OS 6-inch map. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 13.65m NW-SE; 6.35m NW-SE) surviving complete to two storeys with good quoins on the SW side of the R375 Ballinasloe to Athleague road. There are two inaccessible rooms at the ground floor, each with its own doorway on the NE side, while the NW room has two sluices at the base of the W wall.
