Gateway

Located on a level landscape and on the wall defining the demesne of Grange House and at the entrance to the avenue up to the house. The gateway has a large masonry pier (dims 2.5m N-S; 0.78m E-W; H c. 2.5m) on each side of a carriageway (Wth 3.15m) that is surmounted by an arch, which is probably not original. The piers have some punch-dressed stones and each is pierced by a doorway (Wth 0.96m; H 1.88m) that is now blocked. The piers are surmounted by standing eagles facing inwards that might not be original. An armorial plaque (Wth 0.64m; H 0.72m) displays the arms of Lyster impaling FitzGerald with the French motto ‘Vivat vigeat / Dieu es tout / Floreat en..’ on a ribbon below. The crest and the gateway celebrate the marriage of Thomas Lyster of Grange and Bridget, daughter of Thomas FitzGerald of Turlough, Co. Mayo, in 1743. Thomas died in 1790 aged 71, having been High Sheriff of Roscommon in 1739 and 1745 (Denny 1909).
