The National Monuments Service's description
On level, low-lying ground. A section (L c. 25m N-S) of a roadway was excavated (06E1097) by L. Morahan. A metaled surface (dims c. 14m N-S; c. 8m E-W) between open ditches at W (Wth 5m; D 0.7m) and E (Wth 1-2.6m; D 0.6m) that drained to the N where there is a W-E stream from the reclaimed lake of Loughnanean. The ditches are c. 12-14m apart and are roughly aligned on the gatehouse of Roscommon castle (RO039-043001-), c. 150m to the SW. The surface was cut by an iron furnace (RO039-043022-), evident as iron slag, charcoal and fire-redenned clay, very little of which survived as it was in turn cut by the burial of an adult female and baby (RO039-043023-). (Morahan 2007)
