The National Monuments Service's description
No surface trace visible of Clonbeg Castle (OF038-019001-) which belonged to the O'Carroll's (O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 31). Modern farmbuildings and silage pit have been built on the site of the castle. Depicted as a small rectangular castle within the W quadrant of a possible circular enclosure or earthen bawn within a grove of trees on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This enclosing feature is depicted as a roughly square-shaped area defined by two earthen banks with an intervening wide fosse on the revised 1908 ed. OS 25-inch map. On this map the enclosing element is only visible on the E and S sides of the castle. A linear bank runs NW off the E side of the enclosure which sub-divides the interior of the bawn. No enclosing element of the bawn is indicated on the W and N sides of the castle.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
