The National Monuments Service's description
No surface trace visible of Clonbeg Castle which belonged to the O'Carroll's (O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 31). Modern farm buildings and silage pit have been built on the site of the castle. Depicted as a small rectangular castle orientated NE-SW with a small projecting tower on the NE wall of the building close to the the N angle of the castle which is standing in the W quadrant of a circular enclosure or earthen bawn (OF038-019002-) within a grove of trees on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
