The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on the spine of a NW-SE drumlin ridge towards the SE end. Two circular enclosures are depicted at Aghacloghan on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) and this is the more southerly monument with rath (MO028-056----) is c. 140m to the NW. It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 46m NE-SW; 42m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.7m at NW to 1.8m at SE) that is reduced to a low scarp N-E. There is an outer fosse (at NW: Wth of top 6m) S-W-NNE, and an outer bank (at NW: Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.3m) SW-N. There is an entrance (Wth of base 2.2m) at SE, and the interior is bisected by a NE-SW field bank (max. ext. diam. 57m NW-SE).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
