The National Monuments Service's description

Located in a marshy bog at the NE end of Lough Avattan, originally a sub-triangular lake (dims c. 400m NE-SW; c. 260m NW-SE at SW; c. 100m NW-SE at NE) now reduced to an oval area (dims c. 380m NE-SW; c. 160m NW-SE) of open water. A small island (diam. c. 5m) is depicted only on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map at a point close to where a stream exits the lake at NE. The area was inaccessible, but it may prove to be a sand bar.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
