The National Monuments Service's description

Located in a bay (dims c. 200m NE-SW; c. 120m NW-SE) on the SE shore of the small oval S part (dims c. 540m NE-SW; c. 220m NW-SE) of Black Lough. This is represented as a large island (dims c. 45m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is an overgrown platform (diam. 20m; H 0.7m over the water) composed of small stones. W of the crannog about fifteen piles can be seen in the water.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
