Ringfort - rath

The National Monuments Service's description

Located at the summit of a hill that has a lower spur to the SW with the rath (MO017-058----) at its tip c. 500m distant and a lower spur to the E that has the rath (MO017-060----) at its tip c. 400m distant. This rath is depicted as an earthwork on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 49m WNW-ESE; 46m NNE-SSW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 5m; int. H 0.7-c. 1.4m; ext. H 1.8m at E to c. 4m W-N) and hedge that is flush with the interior at NE and SW. The bank is surrounded by an outer fosse (Wth of base c. 2m; ext. D 1.4-2m) that has been filled in NE-SE. The entrance (Wth of base 4.8m) is at ESE, and the fosse is surrounded by a field bank and road SE-SW and a farm lane SW-NW.
