The National Monuments Service's description
A pyramid-shaped sandstone cross-base that had been built into the wall of the 18th century burial chambers standing on the site of the medieval church (MO007-007001-) was recently removed from the wall and is now standing in the graveyard (MO007-007004-) a few meters N of the W end of the Johnston burial chamber (Moloney 2004, 351). This cross-base (dims of base 0.58m x 0.38m; dims of top 0.43m x 0.28m; H 0.48m) may have supported in its socket (dims 0.28m x 0.13m; D 0.15m) the cross head (MO007-014010-) that was recorded in 1939 (Paterson, Gaffikin & Davies 1939, 28) and which is now housed in the Monaghan County Museum (accession no. 2002:4). The fragment is from a perforated ringed cross (surviving H c. 0.6m; surviving span c. 0.33m; T c. 6cm) and is carved on one side with a crucifixion and two incomplete figures. The reverse has some crudely-fashioned bosses.
